On the first round of betting before the flop, do you have to wait until your turn to look at your cards. I noticed they do this on the WPT but I figured it was just so the camera gets a look at them.

I thought it was because the players wanted to study the reactions of the other players looking at their hole cards.

Yeah but is it a rule that you have to wait? And if so what happens if you look before your turn?

they do it so they can look at others, and not give away tells before it's their turn

It's not a rule, but most pro players wait. An exception: T.J. Cloutier, who claims he peeks at his cards as soon as he gets them, then observes the other players. At least, that's what he says in his book...

You can give away some strong tells if you look at your cards right away before anyone else does anything.
If you see you have a good hand and instinctively reach for your chips and someone sees this they may fold as opposed to putting money in the pot. I know I have caught some people doing this and have saved myself some money.
Also if there is someone in early position who has a marginal hand and you are in late position they see you look at your cards and not reach for your chips next time they can assume you will fold and then they will have to worry about one less player in the pot and can act accordingly.
All that said I usually look at my cards right away. It is a habit I need to break.

I usually look at my hole cards when the action gets to me to prevent giving any information about my hand away for free.

It's not a rule, but most players do it for the reasons stated above.
T.J. Cloutier says he always takes a quick peek at his cards immediately when he gets them, so he doesn't miss anything while looking at them later. Of course I really doubt there are many people who can get a read on T.J. from watching him glance at his cards.

I look at them when I get round to it - sometimes, I'm ready and waiting as soon as they are dealt, other times I will be "forced" when it comes to my turn to call. I don't really pay too much attention to be fair - you can study reactions whether you know what you've got or not, so I don't think it really matters.
I like to look earlier rather than later so I can have a quick think about what I've got before I have to make a decision. Don't forget, the pro's know the odds like the back of their hands, so they will see their cards and can make an almost immediate decision on how to proceed. Chumps like me need a little time!
